Senior Football Success for KCS

On Wednesday 21st September, our senior footballers had a championship game against Scoil Mhuire gan Smál who are located in Blarney.

Kinsale started off the day very strong and there was no messing around when Gearoid Kearney got the ball and does what he does best taking on the entire Blarney back line and firing it in low and hard on the "weaker" left foot to open the score line 1-0 to no score.

Noah Ryan wanted to get in on the action as the midfielder caught a ball out of the sky which was placed up there by keeper Senan Aherne. Once the ball was in his hands, he went past 4 Blarney players before squaring it to David Looney who hit a low left footed half volley into an empty net. Score now 2-0 to no score.

Blarney weren't long responding with 2 nicely taken points in quick succession after sloppy play from Kinsale.

Fantastic teamwork skills were shown from midfielders Kian O’Callaghan and Noah Ryan, when Noah once again took on Blarney by running at them, which evidently resulted in a goal for the young midfielder.

Nicely taken points from David Looney, Gearoid Kearney and Leo Hennessy meant it was 3-3 to 0-4 approaching half time.

Blarney kept on coming at Kinsale but with challenges from the half back line consisting of Riordan Stewart, Kris O’Callaghan and Conor Fitzpatrick, they didn’t have much success. They couldn’t see a way back in as David Looney put the nail in the coffin on the brink of half time by adding 2 goals.

The keeper was clearly still rattled from the previous goal as his kick out dropped short to David Looney who wasn’t messing around when he drilled it in low and hard to make it, 5-3 to 0-4 on half time.

The start to the second half wasn’t as lively with sloppy play from Kinsale resulting in changes, which saw Fionn Aherne and Charlie Sheehan being replaced by an eager Cian Looney and Jamie O’Sullivan. Kinsale were still noticeably strong at the back. Challenges from the previously mentioned half back line and Jason Russell were getting in on the act. Although it wasn’t enough for Kinsale to stop Blarney who got 4 consecutive points - score now 5-3 to 0-8.

Kinsale added to their tally, with a score from the revolutionised forward David O’Leary. They didn’t stop there with impressive points from Jamie O’Sullivan and the standout player David looney making the score 5-6 to 0-8.

Not much happened from then on with neither team able to get it going in the second half. The game ended 5-6 to 0-10 in favour of Kinsale who advance on in the county championship. Kinsale standouts included Noah Ryan, Gearoid Kearney and Kris O’Callaghan but for man of the match you couldn’t look past the impressive David Looney.
