6th Year Geographical Investigation at Garrettstown Beach

6th Year Geography students made the journey to Garrettstown Beach on Thursday 22nd September, as part of their Geographical Investigation. The Geographical Investigation is worth 20% of their overall mark.

The aim of the investigation was to investigate the geomorphic processes of transportation and deposition in a coastal environment . Despite the harsh weather conditions, the students went straight to work and participated fully in using various pieces of equipment to take measurements and collect data. The students examined transportation by calculating the rate of longshore drift, completed a wave survey by completing a wave analysis to identify the wave type, investigated deposition by using a beach fabric analysis and constructed a beach profile, identifying the foreshore and backshore.

The students learned many new skills, such as learning to use a clinometer. The students gained a greater understanding of coastal processes of transportation and deposition in a coastal environment. The students had a great day, with some students braving the water for a quick swim, before going back into school for the GI booklet write up.
