Éacht na Scoláirí 2020

This year’s awards ceremony took place via an alternative online medium.  We were delighted that it could continue in a socially distant environment while also bringing a wider audience together to acknowledge the achievements of our students.  Our MC for the evening was Deputy Principal Ms. Kathleen O’Brien.

Our guest of honour was Ms. Cathriona Hallahan MD of Microsoft Ireland. Kinsale Community School is very fortunate to benefit from the privileged status of being a Microsoft Showcase School. This has seen a significant investment of intellectual and innovative capital in our school and as a result of this link forged with Microsoft, our students were able to seamlessly continue to learn remotely during the school closure.

Ms Cathriona Hallahan is a remarkable role model for all women. Her values, vision and vital insight has helped to enhance pedagogical practice and revolutionise learning.

Ms Hallahan and her colleagues have created a virtual learning environment, which reminds us that we are participants in a global community experiencing an evolution to learning and teaching as we have known it.

Microsoft Teams facilitated student engagement and enabled staff to support student wellbeing during the national lockdown. It is now firmly established as a key teaching tool to unlock learning potential and digital media literacy has evolved to become a passport to future study and the world of work.

This year we introduced a new award- The Principal’s Award. This year principal Mr. Fergal McCarthy wanted to recognise the positive contribution and academic progress that Meabh Aherne a student in 6th year has made in our school. It is very fitting that in its inaugural year this award was presented to a very diligent student such as Meabh who has immersed herself in so much both within and outside the classroom throughout her time in KCS, namely Meitheal programme which aims to mentor 1st years and volunteering in the school shop at lunch time.
