TY Students Making a Difference: Community Work Module Highlights
This year, our Transition Year (TY) students have embraced an incredible opportunity to make a difference through the Community Work module, led by Ms. Sinead O'Donovan, Ms Yvonne Croghan and Ms. Maria Brosnan. The module, which quickly became a popular choice, allows students to give back to their community and develop valuable skills by engaging in hands-on, meaningful projects. Here’s a look at the outstanding work they’re doing and the benefits it brings to both the students and the community.
Bringing Joy to the Elderly at Kinsale Hospital: A group of students are visiting Kinsale Hospital twice weekly, bringing warmth and energy to the residents there. During each visit, students engage the elderly in games, storytelling, and music—helping to create connections across generations. These interactions are enriching for both groups, with students learning compassion and communication while residents enjoy companionship and entertainment. It’s an experience that leaves everyone with lasting memories.
Tackling Environmental Impact with the Deposit Re-turn Scheme: Another cohort of TY students is participating in the Deposit Re-turn scheme, a project focused on reducing litter and waste in our community. By actively promoting recycling, these students are not only cleaning up the environment but also raising awareness about sustainable practices. Through this work, students are learning firsthand about the importance of environmental responsibility and the impact small actions can have on our world.
Community and School Clean-Ups: Students are also taking charge of community clean-ups both around the school grounds and throughout Kinsale. Wearing hi-vis jackets and equipped with litter pickers, they’re tackling waste head-on. Their efforts contribute to creating a clean, safe environment for everyone while reinforcing pride in our shared spaces. The students' dedication to keeping their community litter-free showcases their commitment and serves as a model for others in the area.
Supporting Youth Wellbeing with Kinsale Youth Support Services: Two groups of students have teamed up with Kinsale Youth Support Services, assisting with activities that benefit local youth. This work highlights the students' dedication to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of young people in Kinsale. Through this engagement, students are gaining insight into social issues and are building empathy, leadership skills, and a sense of social responsibility.
Gaining Insight through Alzheimer's Education: In addition to these community-focused projects, students are participating in an online learning program with the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland. This module is equipping them with a better understanding of Alzheimer’s and dementia, which not only broadens their knowledge but also helps them develop sensitivity and awareness toward issues affecting families across Ireland.
The students' involvement in these projects is truly inspiring, and they are already discussing more ideas for future community initiatives. Their work benefits everyone—enhancing the lives of residents, improving the environment, and supporting local youth. But equally important, it helps the students themselves, teaching them the power of service, the value of teamwork, and the importance of community. We look forward to following their journey and seeing the positive impact they will continue to make.
