Cork County Comhairle na nÓg AGM 2024: A Day of Engagement and Advocacy
On the 28th of November 2024, the Cork County Comhairle na nÓg AGM was held at Cork County Hall, bringing together young people from across the county to discuss key issues and make their voices heard. The event, which serves as an important platform for youth participation in decision-making, focused this year on the critical topic of mental health for young people.
KCS students represented the school with distinction at the event. The delegation included first-year students Barry O’Reilly, Alex Hipwell, Áine Samh Bohan–O’Duinnín, and Isaura Ramalho, along with second-year students Caoimhe Cotter and Emily Carroll. Their participation showcased their enthusiasm and dedication, making the school proud.
The day began with an inspiring address by Deputy Mayor of Cork, Martin Coughlan, who emphasized the importance of youth engagement in shaping a better future. He was joined by Niall O’Callaghan from Healthy Ireland, who highlighted the resources and initiatives available to promote mental wellbeing among Ireland’s youth. Their speeches set a hopeful and proactive tone for the day ahead.
Morning Session: Walking Debate
The first half of the day featured a lively walking debate, where students explored a range of thought-provoking topics by physically moving to designated areas to represent their stance on various statements. This interactive format encouraged participants to reflect on their values and express their perspectives, fostering critical thinking and mutual respect.
Afternoon Session: Group Workshops on Mental Health
Following a well-deserved lunch break, attendees delved into group workshops that focused on the event’s central theme: mental health for young people. In small groups, students collaborated to identify the most pressing mental health challenges faced by their peers and brainstormed practical solutions. Discussions revolved around access to mental health services, the stigma surrounding mental illness, and the role schools and communities can play in supporting young people.
Building a Better Future
The insights and ideas generated during the workshops will guide Cork County Comhairle na nÓg's initiatives for the coming year. By prioritising mental health, the group aims to amplify the voices of young people and influence local and national policies that directly impact their wellbeing.
This year's AGM was a resounding success, showcasing the energy, creativity, and determination of Cork’s youth to advocate for meaningful change. Events like these are a testament to the power of collective action and the importance of creating spaces where young people can lead discussions about the issues that matter most to them.
We look forward to seeing the progress and initiatives that will emerge from the ideas generated at the AGM. A big thank you to all participants, organisers, and guest speakers for making the day an inspiring and impactful experience!
