Meadow Trip for TY Sustainability Team

This year's TY Sustainability Team went on a field trip to Saile Community Centre meadow equipped with butterfly nets, pooters and ID swatches to identify pollinators such as butterflies, bees and other insects.

The Bombus pascuroum or Common Carder Bee was most prevalent of the bumble bees and two butterflies. A large White and a Red Admiral were also spotted. A few shield bugs, one of which was thought to be a teenage green shield bug and one ladybird beetle was found. Or was it a ladybug? That's what they're called in the USA. On this side of the pond they're usually referred to as ladybirds. All this helps students learn to identify and appreciate the huge variety and number of pollinators that keep our plants flowering and fruiting and also the importance of biodiversity.

Afterwards, the students ventured into the Community Orchard where they snacked on raspberries and hazelnuts growing there. The group thoroughly enjoyed their day out.
