Bishop Gavin Pastoral Visit

On Thursday, November 24th, our school was honoured by the official visit of Bishop Gavin, marking his inaugural appearance in his capacity as the esteemed Bishop of Cork and Ross. Accompanied by Paul Kelly, the post-primary diocesan advisor.

Bishop Gavin was warmly received by our welcome committee comprising Mr. Fergal McCarthy, Principal, Fr. Robert Young P.P., Fr. James Eivers from the Carmelite Friary, Reverend Eugene Griffin, accompanied by his wife Joanna from St. Multose, and our Head Boy and Girl, Evan Lehane and Jessica Moloney. Adding to the ambiance, the talented musicians of our school provided a warm musical welcome, setting the tone for the Bishop's visit in a delightful manner. Additionally, representing the accomplished students from the Alpha program were Janelle Agyemankusi, Tara Ellis, Holly Murphy, and Eva Coughlan, all distinguished Transition year students. Also, welcoming Bishop Galvin were Ms. Tracey Fleming, Ms. Anne Kelly, Ms. Máire Fleming, and Brian Pentony from the R.E. Department.

Bishop Galvin was brought on a tour of various locations around the school, and paid a special visit to Rang Réalta, where the children had done drawings for him.  He also popped into the ASD units, and saw our radio booth. Drawing from his experience in Rome, Bishop Gavin indulged in a barista Americano from our renowned coffee truck which he enjoyed over conversation in the staffroom.

Bishop Galvin then went to the new gym, where around 300 students were in attendance for a prayer service and a question and answer session with students. Among the attendees were Sr. Rita Twomey, Chairperson of our Board of Management, and members of the Mercy convent. Engaging inquiries from students ranged from Bishop Gavin's upbringing in Dublin to his worldly travels and the responsibilities and experiences of being a Bishop.

To conclude the visit on a delightful note, the G corridor buzzed with excitement as the Home Economics and R.E. Departments had thoughtfully prepared a spread of food and refreshments for everyone. The day was marked by an atmosphere of joy and enrichment, leaving an indelible mark on our school community. We eagerly anticipate and look forward to more such visits.
