RTE at KCS!

KCS MyGug was Filmed for the RTE Documentary ‘Heated’ last 9th of November. A film crew arrived at KCS to interview students and staff about the MyGug anaerobic digester for an RTE documentary series called “Heated” about climate change. The focus of the series is about people taking practical action in their communities to face up to environmental challenges with solutions that can inspire and help cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The KCS MyGug digester was installed in May 2023 and takes food waste and converts it into a biogas which can be used on a special hob in C03 Home Economics room. It also produces a liquid fertiliser which can be used to feed plants in the greenhouse. The crew filmed in several locations around the school. In the Home Economics room, students of last year’s ‘Waste Watchers’ Young Environmentalist Award team explained how they weighed food waste from the canteen and Home Economics rooms over a two-week period to determine how much food waste is being produced in the school.

Based on this information the appropriate-sized digester was purchased last May with the help of an Education for Sustainable Development Grant. The crew filmed students preparing food in the kitchen and the waste being fed into the digester by the TY MyGug Team. A pancake was filmed being cooked on the biogas hob and finally footage was shot of the fertilizer being used in the greenhouse to feed the vegetables and salad leaves growing there. “Heated” is aired every Thursday evening at 8pm on RTE One, so keep an eye out for the episode on biodigesters and the KCS’ MyGug.
