ACCS Conference Success: KCS Students Lead the Way in Dublin Castle

In an inspiring display of youthful enthusiasm and commitment to making a difference, we are thrilled to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of two of our exceptional students, Giulia Moretto (6th year) and Muireann O’Donovan (3rd year), who recently took center stage at the Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools (ACCS): Student Voice and Participation Conference held in the historic Dublin Castle. The event, which showcased the power of student involvement in shaping their education, saw our students deliver compelling presentations that left a lasting impact on attendees.

In the lead-up to this significant event, our students underwent three and a half weeks of rigorous online preparatory training, skillfully facilitated by Aine O’Sullivan (ACCS), Ger O’Sullivan (NCCA), and David Cahill (ACCS). The seeds of their ideas for this conference were sown during a prior ACCS gathering in February, held in Port Laois.

At the conference, Giulia and Muireann addressed pressing issues affecting students today. They first discussed the impacts of bullying in schools, shedding light on this important topic. Subsequently, they led a group discussion on the vital subject of student-teacher relationships. They emphasised the pivotal role of strong student-teacher bonds in creating a conducive learning environment and shared insights into the qualities that make such relationships successful.

One key point that emerged during these discussions was the mutual commitment required from both students and teachers to improve these relationships. It was stressed that both parties must be willing to make an effort to enhance their interactions.

Furthermore, our students explored ways to enhance student-teacher relationships, including fostering a willingness to learn and ensuring that personal challenges do not affect the classroom atmosphere negatively. They firmly believe that these relationships can be strengthened, benefiting everyone involved in the educational journey.

Principal Fergal McCarthy expressed his pride in the students, stating, "Our students have consistently shown a remarkable commitment to making a positive impact on our school community. Their active involvement and leadership skills have not only enriched our school but have now been recognised on a national stage. It's a testament to their dedication and the supportive environment we cultivate at Kinsale Community School."

The ACCS: Student Voice and Participation Conference at Dublin Castle proved to be a remarkable platform for our students to amplify their voices and contribute to the broader conversation about student involvement in education. It served as a reminder that young people have the potential to be powerful catalysts for change when given the opportunity and the right platform.

As we celebrate the achievements of our students at the conference, it's also a moment to reflect on the importance of fostering a culture of active student participation within our schools. Kinsale Community School continues to be a shining example of how students, when empowered and encouraged, can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education.

The journey of our students at Dublin Castle is a testament to the bright future that awaits them and the positive impact they will continue to make in our community and beyond. We look forward to witnessing their continued growth as leaders and advocates for change.
