Seaweed Foraging with Kinsale Food Tours
3A5 had a very special and unique opportunity engaging in a seaweed foraging tour at Garrettstown beach today. The students were guided by the very knowledgeable Suzanne Burns from Kinsale Food Tours. Suzanne showed the students the different types of seaweed that populate our nearby shoreline. The students got hands on while foraging and got to feel many varieties of seaweed, such as gutweed, carrageen, pepper dillisk, nori, sea lettuce, dulse, kelp and sea beat to name a few. Suzanne outlined the health benefits associated with certain species. She also described the delicious variety of flavours that could be expected from some of the edible strands. Many of the students were very happy to sample the nutritious superfood during the tour. After today’s eye opening experience, the students plan to incorporate some seaweed into their upcoming sustainable cookbook initiative, which will contain more ingredients sourced close to Kinsale to create delicious recipes.
