Junior Cycle Book Recommendation of the Month

Welcome to Nowhere By Elizabeth Laird

A book review by: Siifen O’Rielly

‘Welcome to Nowhere’ is about a 15-year-old boy and his family who are fleeing war in Syria. Omar has lived in Syria all his life he doesn’t care about politics and fighting all he wants is to have a care free childhood and to become a successful business man. When Omar's older brother Musa gets mixed up with some activists everything goes downhill.

This story follows the life of a young boy who becomes a refugee in his own country before leaving to seek asylum in Europe. His story is the story of many people fleeing violence, war, and natural disasters hunger around the world today. In this page turner we see how Omar`s life is turned upside down and how he struggles to survive day to day. His story shows that even thorough tough times people can achieve more than they ever thought possible with the help of family, friends and international supports.

I loved this book especially the main character who was brave and kind. I found the ending a bit disappointing but you are going to have to read it to see if you agree. I would recommend the book to anybody who is interested in reading historical fiction about children living in conflict. I would give this book 7 out of 10.
