Numeracy at KCS
Our after-school numeracy program ran every Wednesday by Teachers of Kinsale Community School for our first year students. The program is designed to build students confidence in the fundamentals of Mathematics such as, decimals, fractions and percentages. The program is far more than an “extra Maths class” as it is intended to teach these concepts through fun activities in a less formal environment. In this program students are encouraged to work in small groups, ask questions frequently and discuss the different methods to approaching a problem. The benefits of the program have been noticed not just in the Maths department but throughout the school in every subject, as the student’s confidence and aptitude in maths increased. The popularity of the numeracy program can also be seen by the number of students participating in the program, attendance was consistently excellent and the number students volunteering to participate increased from last year with three classes running every Wednesday. By ensuring these students have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of Mathematics going into 2nd year, We in KCS aim to build on this foundation so students can tackle any problem presented in front of them.
