Beginning of Year Mass at St. John the Baptist Church

On Tuesday, 24th September, our school came together to celebrate the beginning of year mass, an important tradition in Kinsale Community School. Held in the St. John the Baptist Church, the occasion was attended in person by our First Year and Sixth Year students, along with their teachers and classroom assistants. The rest of the school community participated by watching the liturgy online from their classrooms, ensuring everyone was able to join in this special moment of reflection and prayer.

This year’s mass was particularly significant as it marked the first event where our newly appointed Head Girl, Ellie Coughlan, and Head Boy, Mark O'Driscoll, represented the student body and led us in the opening prayer. They were accompanied by Deputy Head Girl, Sarah Graham, and Deputy Head Boy, Seán O'Keeffe, who also played a key role in the liturgy. Their presence highlights the importance of student leadership within our school and their commitment to guiding their peers throughout the academic year.

This annual mass is a meaningful way for our entire school to pause, reflect, and set a positive tone for the year ahead. It is a time for us to come together as one, united in spirit and purpose, as we seek guidance and blessings for the journey that lies ahead.

A heartfelt thanks to Fr. Robert Young for facilitating today’s mass and for the spiritual leadership he provides to us throughout the year. His words always inspire us and remind us of the core values that guide our school community.

Music was a central part of the celebration, with the school’s traditional music band which included teachers Ms. Ciara Quinlivan and Mr. Luke O’Connor and the choir providing a beautiful soundtrack to the service. Under the expert guidance of Ms. Bríd Kearney and Ms. Sinéad Brennan, their performances added a rich and reflective atmosphere to the liturgy.

A special mention to our school chaplain, Mr. Brian Pentony, and the Religion Department for their dedication in organising this event. Their hard work and thoughtful preparation ensure that this important tradition continues to be a highlight of our school calendar.

As we journey through this academic year, let this mass serve as a reminder of the strength we find in community, and may it guide us towards a year of growth, learning, and unity.
