Exploring Chinese Culture in TY: A Fun and Unique Experience

This year, TY students have a unique opportunity to dive into Chinese language and culture. When Ms Hay posted a sign-up form for Chinese classes, I decided to give it a go—I’d always wondered how people read Chinese writing, and this seemed like the perfect chance to find out! With so many interested students, they split us into two groups. I’m part of the first, running from September to January, while the second will start in February.

Classes take place every Monday, fourth period, and they’ve been both fun and eye-opening. So far, we’ve learned to read, write, and pronounce basic Chinese words, including our own names! We’ve also explored cultural elements, like the art of Tai Chi—a traditional Chinese martial art focused on balance and flow—and sampled topics on Chinese cuisine, like dumplings and fried rice.

Our teacher, Ms Huang, is incredibly supportive and makes learning fun. She runs a sticker system: every time you answer correctly, you earn a sticker, with a prize for the top sticker collector at year’s end. It’s a great way to keep us engaged and motivated.

I’m really glad I joined, as I’m already learning so much and having a great time. For anyone in TY next year, I’d definitely recommend signing up for Chinese if it’s offered—you won’t regret it!
