Junior Camogie Munster Champions
On Wednesday 24th of January the bus with the 25 player panel along with their coaches, Ms Harrington and Ms Helbrow, left KCS for Mallow to take on St Flannan’s College of Ennis in the Junior Camogie Munster Colleges Final. This was the second year in a row for the team to make the junior Munster Final but with the hurt of last years loss they knew there was a job to be done.
Once the ball was thrown in a very physical game played out for the full 60 minutes. The St Flannan’s girls were strong and fast which took the KCS team to come to terms with. Kinsale got the opening score of the game which seemed to settle the team. However, St Flannan’s kept attacking the Kinsale defenders and with ten minutes gone KCS found themselves down 1.3 to 3 points. A key player for St Flannan’s was their goalie who had a long range puck out who was landing ball down in front of the Kinsale full back line, but she could also score long range frees. Kinsale needed to come up with a tactic to prevent any dangerous ball coming in. The KCS girls fought back and led by a single point at half time.
The second half was began just as exciting as the first half. Kinsale started strong however St Flannan’s were still fighting and clawing their way back with score. More long range frees scored by the St Flannan’s keeper narrowed the gap on the scoreboard. A long ball launched into the full forward line by Catherine landed in the hand of Erin Ridgway. With a quick turn and powerful strike the sliotar ended up in the back of the net. KCS were building a comfortable lead but this St Flannan’s side never gave up. The Kinsale backs were under huge pressure with a lot of the play down that half of the pitch for the remaining fifteen minutes of the game. I last minute attempt of redemption for St Flannan’s resulted in the sliotar at the back of the KCS net. Then the final whistle was blown. Kinsale Community School were crown Munster Champions having won by a single point!
They now play Holy Rosary College from Mountbellew of Galway in the Junior Camogie All Ireland Semi Final on Tuesday 30th January 2024 in Mountbellew.
