Gemma's Squad: Join the Chorus of KCS Supporters for Our Swimmer in Brazil

In an extraordinary display of talent and dedication, Gemma Whelan, a fifth-year student at Kinsale Community School and member of the Dolphin Swimming Club, is currently making waves at the inaugural World Deaf Youth Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Gemma, alongside her teammates, is representing Ireland in the prestigious international event, competing against youth athletes from around the world.

The World Deaf Youth Games feature six sports - athletics, badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, and table tennis. Gemma Whelan's remarkable performances in the pool secured her spot in the competition, where she will be competing in seven events over three intense days.

A familiar face in the Cork swimming community, Gemma has been part of the Dolphin Swimming Club in Cork City since 2016. Her daily training routine, dedication, and exceptional skills have earned her the opportunity to join the ranks of only 19 Cork athletes who have represented Ireland at international deaf competitions since the establishment of Deaf Sports Ireland in 1968.

Gemma's journey in Brazil commenced with the women’s 50m backstroke, marking the beginning of a challenging yet exciting series of races. With the prospect of making finals each evening after the morning heats, Gemma is not only showcasing her talent but also adding her name to the rich history of Irish athletes who have excelled on the international stage.

The Irish Team, led by head coach Mick McCormack from Dolphin SC, is in good spirits as they navigate the intense competition. Gemma shared her experiences from Brazil, noting the scorching temperature of around 33 degrees. The competition schedule, adjusted for Irish viewers, begins at 1 o'clock (Irish time) for the heats, with the finals scheduled for 7 pm (Irish time) on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week.

For those eager to follow Gemma's journey and the Irish Team's progress, daily updates will be provided through Dolphin SC, Deaf Sports Ireland and Kinsale Community Schools social media pages. Gemma Whelan's dedication and achievements are not only a source of pride for the school community but also an inspiration for young athletes nationwide.
