World Down Syndrome Day 2023

Down Syndrome Day – 21st March

This year, KCS got involved in World Down Syndrome Day to raise awareness within our school community and to fundraise through an ice cream sale for Down Syndrome Centre Cork. Students Emily Mannings, Rebecca Beecher, Luke Lane, and Eoghan Deasy raised €300 with the ice-cream sales and the students bravely attempted to break the Guinness World Record for most odd socks worn in a day! Unfortunately, we were a little off the world record but we are even more determined next year to beat it!

Old socks were brought in to hang on a clothesline in the G corridor as further awareness raising and Ian Cullinane (TY) took a drone of all Y1’s wearing their odd socks.

The students were also fortunate to receive a virtual talk from Down Syndrome Centre in Cork.  Some key takeaways from the talk were that people with Down Syndrome are extra awesome and rocking an extra chromosome. People with Down Syndrome can sometimes need extra support around Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, Early Intervention, and Parent and Networking Events. These are services that are provided by the Down Syndrome Centre in Cork.

Thanks again for all the support from Sebastian Tretter and Fiona Hedderman to make this day a great success.
