Green Schools Water Ambassador Training and Walkability Audit

The Green Schools Team had a busy week before Midterm Break. On Tuesday 24th of October Skye and Ellie Sheedy (Transition Year) accompanied by Ms. Fitzpatrick went up to Nano Nagle Place Douglas to participate in the Water Ambassador training. As soon as they walked in the door, they were greeted with a lot of freebies, some of which included a green schools hoodie, bag, water bottle etc. They were put on separate tables to begin with and got the opportunity to meet students between 1st to 4th year.

Ruth Gaj-McKeever Senior Theme Coordinator, gave them a brief introduction to the program and discussed how their role in our community could make an impact as well as what was expected of them as Water Ambassadors.  Maya a woman from the Globe told them what the Globe program was, when it takes place and how they can get involved.

After that they had a tea/coffee break, then Caoimhe ’O Brien a Green School's Officer showed them common water topics and how to start a mini campaign. She gave each table a water associated problem and each group had to come up with fun, creative ways to campaign their problem. They then got feedback on their ideas and learned how to run a good campaign.

They received a talk by Sheila McCormack Cooney, Senior Communications Officer Green-Schools regarding communication techniques. Here they devised target audiences and the best way to communicate and spread awareness to different age groups as well as different ways to spread awareness in general.  A male representative from the water ambassadors sponsor Uisce Éireann gave them a talk on how much water is used daily in Ireland, how water treatment plants work in Ireland and how to reduce water usage in a household.

The final talk of the day was from Elaine Doyle Campaigns and Development Officer for Kerry and Cork Clean Coasts. She gave them a talk about her clean coasts campaign and how important our scenic coasts are in Ireland. She also offered advice and assistance for anyone looking to do a litter campaign.  The whole day was so interactive, fun and interesting. Skye and Ellie learned so much from this training day. They are hoping to run a water associated campaign and this helped them gather knowledge on how to do it.

On Wednesday, 25th of October the Green Schools Team took part in a Walkability Audit of the local roads with Green Schools Officer, Catherine Russell. This year, the KCS Green Team are working towards achieving the Travel Flag.
