First Prize for Sophie in Cork County Council Art Competition
Sophie Peare of transition year scooped up first prize in the Cork County Council art contest as part of the ‘One County, One Book’ initiative. Sophie painted this brilliant interpretation of the 'Kaperosa', a figure from Caroline O'Donoghue's novel, who is also known as the 'Housekeeper' or 'White Lady'.
The Council’s ‘One County, One Book’ initiative was designed to promote homegrown literature and literacy to teens and young adults. The event’s chosen book was All Our Hidden Gifts by Cork born author, Caroline O’Donoghue. O’Donoghue, previously paid a visit to Kinsale Community School on Wednesday, the 17th of November 2021, where she spoke with Transition Year Students about this novel. O’Donoghue described the inspiration behind the powerful ‘Housekeeper’ card that appears in ‘All Our Hidden Gifts,’ which in fact did not stem from old Irish Celtic mythology, but in actual fact was inspired by her previous band entitled ‘Greyhounds, Greyhounds, Greyhounds.’
Sophie’s beautiful yet eerie painting can be seen below. Congratulations to Sophie on her fantastic achievement.
